Creating the Background

1. Cut off the selvages of the quilt field and center panel background fabrics.

2. Cut the quilt field fabric lengthwise into 2 pieces 12½˝ × 103˝ and 27½˝ × 103˝.

3. Repeat for the center panel background fabric, only cut down the middle fold line to create 2 same-size pieces 22˝ × the length of the fabric. If you are using the 3¼-yard piece, trim one of the halves to 22˝ × 103˝, and set aside the other half for another project. If you are using the 1⅝-yard piece, sew the 2 halves right sides together along a 22˝ end; then trim the joined piece to 103˝.

4. With right sides together, sew the panels together with the center panel background fabric in the middle and quilt field fabric on the edges. Press the seams open.
